The women also aren’t dressed provocatively…they wearing higher neck clothing and long skirts or pants and a jacket. Even in 1973..but is was Spain…they were still under Franco’s dictatorship and would only come out of it couple of years later, upon his death in 1975.

Yes, this was still Franco's Spain. Before Pedro Almodovar and his ilk wreaked havoc on Spanish cinema with his outrageous films mocking everything in sight, including nuns, sexuality, and men. Women were his "heroes," mostly, and homosexuality was part and parcel of that world.

Oh, yes, back in my pre-reversion days, I liked some of his output like "Women on the Verge..." and especially the Penelope Cruz starrer, "Volver" (which I still appreciate, as the humor in there is very Filipino!) and the moving "Talk to Her" with the lovely songs in it. The more offensive and overtly sexual farces I tend to avoid.

I think Spain needs to return to her conservative values, though. The few older women I've met were lovely -- complete strangers in the parks who were very friendly. Some younger folks at the churches were wonderful, too (I interviewed a couple for Regina Magazine).

I too like the Almodóvar films you mentioned. The “look” of his films were always amazing..despite the subject matter and content!

Yes! He was in advertising, if I recall correctly. He even mocks the over-the-top nature of TV ads in the fabulously colorful "Women on the Verge". His better-funded movies are just gorgeous to look at!

(The really early, cheaply-produced ones are as grungy as the subject matter, LOL. I don't think I made it through the whole movie in those initial offerings as even as a lapsed Catholic, there were some really morally offensive, disgusting elements in them.)

Woman in the Verge was a great and funny film.

Almodóvar's farce is special- kinda hurriedly paced, overdramatic, but the actors play them straight. Penelope Cruz's best work was in "Volver," I think. She was completely convincing in the part. Black humor- you laugh as you cry - and cringe- all at once!
