Did you ever hear about the massacre of the Catholic peasants perpetrated by the French revolutionary soldiers with genocidal intent upon the Vendeans?
How uncanny: I came across the drowning at Nantes for the first time last night in my readings and then today I discover this post. Things always seem to announce themselves like this... thank you as always for sharing such interesting information!
You're welcome, Adria! Funny how God works with these "coincidences," huh? 😄🙏
I never knew about the genocide & appalling atrocities till I met and communicated with the French TV producer who used to work at EWTN and made a movie about the Vendean uprising (The Hidden Rebellion) -Daniel Rabourdin.
I think you would enjoy reading "Open Letter to Confused Catholics" by, Archbishop Lefebvre (Angelus Press). You are certainly not a confused Catholic! And I imagine that much of what is chronicled there will be familiar to you. But there is an interesting discussion of the French Revolution as it relates to Vatican II, ecumenism and religious liberty...
Oh, you know I've never read that Letter by Lefebvre... I bet it touches on all the issues the Church is having today, post-Vatican II. Thank you for the tip!
Until I reverted back to my faith and learned about the Reign of Terror, the Martyrs of Compiegne, and the Vendee rebellion and genocide, I was taught to think of the French Revolution as a real good that had to happen, and the monarchy was evil--you know, that "liberte, egalite, fraternite" and Marie Antoinette stuff bla bla.
A former Spanish friend was revolted by the French national anthem's words --something about "watering the furrows with the blood of our enemies". Interestingly, this movie also has Charette saying something very similar during the battle! Do the French have to be so bloodthirsty about this all the time?? Producer is the nationalist-conservative Puy du Fou Films, too. (Puy du Fou is better known as a French theme park (a la Disney) that shows a conservative portrait of France, founded by Nicholas de Villiers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puy_du_Fou )
The Letter was scripted in the 1980s when I was happily living on the Champ de Mars envisioning the parades organized by Jacques-Louis David while extolling the Revolution's aspirations as a student at the university... so, "Tell me about it!" DUPED! My 180 degree about face and return to the church (assisted by the example of the Carmelites) informs my daily practice of prayer. Thank you, as always for posting such rich material.
Oh! The Carmelites! They have been my favorite religious order. And so many with the name Teresa/Therese in that order, too! Did you visit them somewhere, at some point?
So happy to hear that you have come home to Mother Church! And following a Traditionalist persuasion, too.
In truth, the SSPX (although I didn't even know the first thing about them at the time) was a big factor in my reversion as well--thru that beautiful 2006 Mass in Paris posted on YouTube that transfixed me for the full hour-and-a-half. Stumbled upon it by pure accident (or perhaps, not "accidental"!).
What a phenomenal post--thank you, thank you, so much. You always bring up things nobody else speaks of, these gemstones.
Gosh, you're so welcome. Not sure how you dug up this long-buried thingy, though!
Thank you for the kind comment! Awesome to have you stop by these parts!
